It was shortly after my introduction to muzzle loading that I discovered the muzzle loading shotgun.
Like most of my research, I learned of the muzzle loading shotgun through reading old books. I already loved the muzzle loading rifle but like most enthusiasts, I knew that sticking with muzzle loading rifles would limit me to big and medium game. I took such a liking to the sport that it was only natural that I would try to expand my pursuit of muzzleloader hunting to all of the hunt-able species in my region.
Of course, being a Canadian, I found myself on an impossible mission to locate a muzzle loading shotgun. While there are still a few retailers offering traditional black powder shot-gunning supplies in the USA, there are none in Canada that I know of. But if you look at how little traditional muzzleloading rifles there are on the shelf you would understand. If you were lucky there would be one traditional styled muzzleloader, and if you were really lucky there would be two, both of which would only be in.
Well it was obvious that my challenge would entail locating a muzzle loading shotgun still in production, then try to figure out how to get it imported! Well I would like to be writing this article telling you that there is a plethora of vintage styled muzzle loading shotguns on the market to fit the needs of every muzzle loading sportsmen but in reality, the only two manufacturers I could locate were knight a modern looking muzzleloader and Pedersoli. Personally I took a liking to the Pedersoli built shotguns.
Even from the pictures I saw on the internet I could tell these were quality built shotguns with a traditional taste. Even better was the fact that the models I was looking at came proofed for steel shot.
To make a long story short, finding a retailer that would import a firearm for me was like finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I finally tracked down a Cabelas shotgun built by Pedersoli in 12 gauge, 20 gauge and 10 gauge with fixed chokes; a left modified and a right improved cylinder. It was a true Pedersoli so I started the ordering process with Prophet River Firearms out of Lloydminster Alberta and placed a down payment to get the process rolling.
Strangely enough, Cabelas will not ship firearms to Cabelas Canada, or Canada in general, hence the need for a third party importer. I decided on the 12 gauge rather than the 20 gauge version for the greater number of pellets and power for waterfowl. Although if I was a dedicated waterfowl hunter I would probably choose the mighty 10 gauge!
I must take a minute to thank the folks at Prophet River for their great service. Everyone I talked to was very cooperative and helpful in placing a custom order for a product not readily stocked in their store. My first impressions of this gun was that it was remarkably well built. It was solid, the locks were smooth and locked up surely. The trigger pull was appropriate, and while I have not put a scale on it I will say that it is quite comfortable and not overly heavy.
The best part of this Italian shotgun is how well balanced it is. Never in my life had I held a shotgun that so naturally pointed wherever I wanted it to. Even with the double barrels it was not front heavy, and the length of pull was spot on. The model I chose came with case hardened locks and components which is always a favorite of mine and adds a unique touch.Shooting the Pedersoli 20 ga flintlock double shotgun
Enough of the aesthetics, how does that baby shoot!? The first order of business when getting ready to shoot a new muzzle loader is of course to clean out all of that oil and grease that the factory ships the firearm in then snap a few caps to dry the barrel.
I must say that the manual that the gun is shipped with is less than helpful, but the gun is stamped with 89 grains of powder as a max f, ff, fff who knows?

I remember my grandfather used to reload 12 ga cartridges in the evening on the freshly cleared table.
With some dispensers he weighed powder and pellets as best as he could, then closed the cardboard shell shorter every time because of wear.Mate 30 pro vs p40 pro versus
I also remember that he took great care of those cartridges and he always calculated long before firing one. With the advent of plastic and perhaps economic well-being, the modern hunter on the contrary not only lacks the time to reload, but above all he lacks thrift.
A long shot, inaccurate or otherwise with little chance of success, today is always worth trying: you risk only a few cents. Too bad, however, that in this way you end up neglecting the true essence of hunting, the time dedicated to your passion and the almost maniacal care of your tools. With black powder guns, on the contrary, all this takes shape and hunting becomes even more beautiful.
It is not uncommon that when visiting the village taverns you see old black powder guns, by now rusted and covered by dust, hanging over the fireplace. The environment is typical of the Prealpine belt with large cattle pastures, mixed deciduous and coniferous woods interspersed with more or less large clearings. A wonderful place, sometimes magical, today embellished by this rifle and its unmistakable sound.
Today's shotgun is a 20 gauge side-by-side, the Waterfowl model, complete with all its accessories. Little stuff, actually. In our vest pockets, some test tubes containing single loads of black powder, a flask with the no. Neither more nor less than when we carry 12 ga cartridges. Even the loading of the shotgun is much faster than people could think and The time that our small setter named Maja walks around the car is enough to pour the powder down the muzzle, press on the wad, add the pellets and close it all with a piece of cardboard.
So, with the half-cocked hammers in perfect safety, we begin our journey through time. The dog, a woodcock hunter for several seasons, for the occasion wears an old bell that allows me to follow its movements and, at the same time, listen to the sounds of the shotgun when the dog is pointing to the game.
Despite the fact I did not add a carrying sling, the shotgun weighing just under 3 kg is very well balanced and is easy to carry both when I hold it in my hand and when I support it on the shoulder. I got the same feeling when I shoulder my gun simulating the firing and it is during one of these moments that I no longer hear the bell. Maja found the first partridge.Cisco 3750 switch console
The bird, however, is not slow in taking off and it catches me in a moment of distraction, so that I miss it completely with my first shot. The cloud produced by the combustion of black powder is rather invasive and does not allow me to immediately repeat the shot, while the soft and delicate recoil makes me stay on target.
A few moments later, in fact, as soon as the white smoke lifts, I fire a second shot that hits the bird in full flight. A great shot and a great satisfaction.
Meanwhile, waiting for Maja to retrieve the bird, I have time to pour the powder and shot back into the barrels. Anyway, the hit partridge has something different, a new and very special value. New from Pedersoli: Cook Underhammer pistol. We had already caught a glimpse of it at IWA last year.

BS Tel.With a double-barreled flintlock, one could deliver two rounds of shot in rapid succession to bring down game birds, hasten the departure of small unwanted predators or, when loaded with round ball, kill larger prey or defend against an armed assailant. It was shotgun and slug gun, offering twice the power of a single-barreled flintlock.
Flintlocks first began to appear between and using an improved firing mechanism with a steel surface for the flint, in the jaws of the cock, to strike against. The flintlock mechanism was more efficient, less complicated to manufacture, more robust and easier to operate than any of its predecessors.
The flintlock design used a new L-shaped frizzen hinged at its toe and closed pushed rearward to cover the priming charge in the pan. With the hammer fully cocked it was usually placed in the half-cock position for safetypulling the trigger released the sear, allowing the hammer to fall and strike the backside of the pan cover, or leaf, driving it forward to expose the priming charge while the flint scraped against the steel surface, creating sparks to ignite the priming powder.
If everything worked, the burning priming powder was drawn into the touch hole, igniting the powder charge in the barrel. A double-barreled flintlock gave you a second chance, however. Traditionally styled 18th century flintlock muskets and pistols built during the Revolutionary War era were slowly being replaced with newer and more artistically designed longrifles and fowlers by the end of the s.
The necessities of war were no longer the driving force behind arms-makers, but rather fulfilling the needs of Americans as they began to explore and settle territory farther to the west in the early 19th century. There was a lot for pioneering Americans to explore and settle. Longrifles, fowlers and pistols were as essential to that effort as a horse and wagon. They were, perhaps, the most beautiful rifles and pistols ever produced in America.
Flintlocks in the hands of explorers venturing west in the early s were the first arms of the American frontier. William Travis, commander of the troops sent in support of the Alamo in January offavored a double-barreled shotgun, and advocated arming the Texas Army Cavalry with such weapons.
The double-barreled flintlock shotgun was no stranger to those the Texas Rangers pursued in the early s. All one needed was powder and ball. Davide Pedersoli has been at the center of manufacturing classic European and American flintlock and percussion rifles and pistols for 60 years, but the development of a double-barreled flintlock shotgun is rather new for this legendary Italian arms-maker.
I sat down with Pierangelo Pedersoli at the SHOT Show, and we began a discussion about European Howdah pistols that dated back to the flintlock and percussion era. At the time, Pedersoli was looking for ways to expand its product line, which already included some of the most famous European and American single-shot long arms and pistols in history.
My suggestion of a 19th century European double-barreled Howdah pistol intrigued Pierangelo; over the next couple of years we discussed such designs. Building a left-side pistol lock was the hardest part, even though the company already had the Kodiak Express double rifle.
Pierangelo made some prototypes, and in the first examples of the Pedersoli Howdah were introduced in gauge and. A couple of years later, we discussed the next step actually a step back : making a double-barreled flintlock Howdah pistol.

Again, the left-side lock was going to be the most difficult part of the design. In the interim, our discussions led to the. This classic, French-inspired, gauge double gun is stocked in select oil-finished American walnut with deep checkering on the wrist and forend. The browned, inch barrels are chrome lined and given modified chokes. It has good balance, classic styling and impeccable handling—all the traits of a late 18th century double-barreled flintlock.
For the first field test of the new Pedersoli Classic Side-By-Side Deluxe, I went with the factory-recommended loads for birdshot and slugs.
